Hot Flashes

A hot flash is a sudden feeling of heat, often involving the face, neck and upper body.

You may suddenly feel:

“Why am I so hot?”

You may sweat, feel uncomfortable or notice your heart beating faster.

Some women experience hot flashes occasionally.

Others experience them several times a day.

Hot flashes can also happen during sleep and become night sweats, which may repeatedly wake you.

2. Night Sweats and Poor Sleep

You may wake up:

Sweating

Feeling hot

Throwing off the blanket

Changing clothes

Finding it difficult to fall asleep again

Over time, poor sleep can affect:

Concentration

Memory

Mood

Appetite

Energy

शारीरिक गतिविधि

This is why sleep problems during menopause shouldn’t simply be dismissed as “normal ageing.”

If symptoms are affecting your quality of life, treatment options are available.

3. Mood Changes

Some women experience:

Irritability

Anxiety

Low mood

Feeling emotionally overwhelmed

Increased stress

Mood swings

Hormonal changes may contribute, but menopause does not mean every emotional change is automatically caused by hormones.

Life circumstances matter too.

Many women in midlife are simultaneously managing:

Work

Children

Aging parents

Relationships

Financial responsibilities

Changes in their own health

So don’t blame everything on menopause.

If persistent anxiety or depression is affecting your daily life, speak with a healthcare professional.

Your mental health deserves proper attention.

4. Brain Fog and Concentration Problems

You may find yourself thinking:

“Why did I walk into this room?”

या:

“I know that person’s name, but I just can’t remember it!”

Some women report difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness and feeling mentally slower during the menopausal transition.

Poor sleep and stress can make these problems worse.

Occasional forgetfulness is not necessarily a sign of serious disease.

But sudden, severe or progressively worsening cognitive problems should not simply be blamed on menopause.

5. Vaginal Dryness

Declining oestrogen can cause changes in vaginal tissues.

Some women experience:

Vaginal dryness

Burning or irritation

Pain during sex

Reduced comfort

Urinary symptoms

These symptoms can be embarrassing to discuss.

But they are medical symptoms—not something you simply have to tolerate.

Vaginal moisturizers and lubricants can help some women, and local vaginal oestrogen may be appropriate for others depending on their medical history.

6. Changes in Urination

Some women notice:

Increased urinary frequency

Urgency

Vaginal or urinary discomfort

Recurrent urinary tract infections

The tissues around the vagina and urinary tract can become thinner and drier as oestrogen levels fall.

If you have burning during urination, blood in the urine, fever or persistent urinary symptoms, don’t assume it is simply menopause.

Get evaluated.

7. Weight Gain and Changes in Body Shape

This is one of the biggest concerns women bring up during midlife.

You may say:

“I am eating almost the same food, but my waist is increasing.”

Menopause can coincide with changes in body composition and fat distribution.

But we should not blame every kilogram on hormones.

Ageing, reduced physical activity, loss of muscle mass, sleep problems, dietary habits and changes in energy expenditure all contribute.

This is why the solution is not:

“Eat less and starve yourself.”

Instead, midlife is the time to become more intentional about:

protein + muscle + movement + portion control + sleep.

8. Loss of Muscle Becomes More Important

As we get older, maintaining muscle becomes increasingly important.

Muscle helps with:

Strength

Mobility

Balance

Glucose metabolism

Independence

Healthy ageing

This is why I would not recommend relying only on walking for your long-term health.

Walking is excellent.

But add strength training appropriate to your ability.

This could include:

Resistance bands

Light weights

Squats or sit-to-stand exercises

Wall push-ups

Other resistance exercises

If you have medical or joint problems, get appropriate advice before starting a new exercise programme.

9. Your Bones Need More Attention After Menopause

This is one of the most important health issues women should understand.

Oestrogen helps protect bone.

After menopause, bone loss can accelerate, particularly during the early postmenopausal years. This can increase the risk of osteoporosis and fractures.

So menopause is a good time to ask:

Am I getting enough calcium?

Am I getting enough vitamin D?

Am I doing weight-bearing and strength exercises?

Do I have risk factors for osteoporosis?

Depending on your age and risk factors, your doctor may recommend bone-density testing.

10. Heart Health Becomes More Important

Before menopause, women generally have a lower cardiovascular risk than men of the same age.

But this advantage becomes less pronounced as women age and oestrogen levels decline.

At the same time, midlife may bring:

Higher blood pressure

Higher cholesterol

Less physical activity

Weight gain

Increasing blood glucose

Together, these factors can increase cardiovascular risk.

So after menopause, don’t focus only on hot flashes.

Know your:

Blood pressure + cholesterol + blood glucose + waist circumference + overall fitness.

Menopause and Diabetes Risk

This is especially relevant to the TanManSwasth audience.

Midlife weight gain, reduced activity and increasing abdominal fat can contribute to insulin resistance and diabetes risk.

If you already have:

Prediabetes

Family history of diabetes

Increasing waist circumference

उच्च रक्तचाप

Abnormal cholesterol

Previous gestational diabetes

then menopause is an especially good time to become proactive about metabolic health.

Ask your doctor whether you need appropriate glucose screening.

Don’t wait for symptoms of diabetes.

Should You Get Hormone Tests to Diagnose Menopause?

For many women over 45 with typical symptoms and changes in their periods, menopause can often be identified clinically.

Hormone levels fluctuate considerably during perimenopause, so a single hormone test may not provide a useful answer.

ACOG notes that routine hormone testing is generally not recommended before starting hormone therapy for typical menopausal symptoms, because levels can change significantly during the transition.

However, younger women with unusual menstrual changes or suspected early menopause may require a different evaluation.

So don’t order a random “hormone panel” simply because someone online recommends it.

Talk to your doctor about which tests, if any, are actually appropriate.

Can Menopause Be Treated?

Absolutely.

Menopause itself is natural and doesn’t need to be “cured.”

But troublesome symptoms can be treated.

Treatment depends on:

Which symptoms you have

How severe they are

Your age

Your medical history

Your personal preferences

Whether you have a uterus

Whether you have certain health conditions

There is no single treatment that is right for every woman.

Hormone Therapy: Is It Safe?

This is one of the most misunderstood topics in menopause.

Hormone therapy can be very effective for symptoms such as:

Hot flashes

Night sweats

Vaginal symptoms

Systemic hormone therapy is considered the most effective treatment for bothersome hot flashes and night sweats.

But hormone therapy is not suitable for everyone.

The benefits and risks depend on factors such as:

Age

Timing of treatment

Medical history

Type of hormone therapy

Route of administration

Whether the woman has a uterus

If a woman still has a uterus and uses systemic oestrogen, a progestogen is generally needed to protect the uterine lining. Women without a uterus may be able to use oestrogen alone.

This is why hormone therapy should be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional rather than started from an online recommendation.

What About Vaginal Oestrogen?

For women whose main problem is vaginal dryness, irritation or related urinary symptoms, local vaginal oestrogen may be an option.

It delivers a low dose locally and is different from systemic hormone therapy.

A healthcare professional can determine whether it is appropriate based on your symptoms and medical history.

What If You Don’t Want Hormone Therapy?

You still have options.

Depending on your symptoms, non-hormonal approaches may include:

Cooling strategies for hot flashes

Regular physical activity

Weight management when appropriate

Improving sleep habits

Stress-management techniques

Certain prescription non-hormonal medications

Vaginal moisturizers

Lubricants

ACOG notes that lifestyle measures and medications can both play a role in managing hot flashes.

The right choice depends on your symptoms and medical history.

Don’t Fall for “Natural Menopause Cure” Claims

Menopause has become a huge online business.

You may see advertisements promising:

“Balance your hormones naturally.”

“Reverse menopause.”

“Lose belly fat without diet or exercise.”

“Replace hormone therapy with this herbal supplement.”

Be careful.

Natural does not automatically mean:

safe + effective + appropriate for everyone.

ACOG specifically recommends being skeptical of exaggerated menopause claims and emphasizes balanced information about benefits and risks.

Don’t spend large amounts of money on supplements before discussing them with your healthcare professional.

What Should You Eat During Menopause?

There is no magical menopause diet.

Instead, build a nutrient-dense, sustainable eating pattern.

Aim to include:

Protein

Eggs, fish, chicken, curd, paneer, dal, beans, soy and other suitable protein sources.

Protein becomes particularly important as you work to preserve muscle.

Vegetables

Aim for a wide variety.

Whole Fruits

Choose whole fruit rather than relying heavily on juices.

High-Fibre Foods

Dal, beans, vegetables, whole grains and other fibre-rich foods can support digestive and metabolic health.

Healthy Fats

Nuts, seeds and other healthy fat sources can be included in appropriate portions.

Calcium-Rich Foods

Dairy products or suitable alternatives can help support bone health.

The exact diet should be adapted to your health conditions, preferences and nutritional requirements.

What About Calcium?

Calcium is important for maintaining bone health.

Food sources can include:

Milk

Curd

Paneer

Calcium-fortified foods

Certain leafy greens

Other calcium-containing foods

But more calcium is not automatically better.

Whether you need a supplement depends on your diet, age, health status and other factors.

Discuss supplementation with your healthcare professional rather than taking large doses on your own.

Vitamin D Matters Too

Vitamin D supports bone health and calcium metabolism.

Whether you need supplementation depends on your dietary intake, sun exposure, age, risk factors and blood levels where testing is appropriate.

If you suspect deficiency, discuss it with your doctor rather than taking very high doses.

Exercise: Your Menopause Medicine Without a Prescription

If I had to choose one lifestyle habit that deserves more attention during menopause, it would be regular physical activity.

Think beyond weight loss.

Exercise supports:

<ul fitness

Balance

Mood

Sleep

Metabolic health

A good weekly routine can include:

Walking or other aerobic activity

For cardiovascular fitness.

Strength training

For muscle and bone.

Balance exercises

For mobility and fall prevention.

Flexibility and mobility work

For comfortable movement.

You don’t need to become a fitness athlete.

You need to keep your body moving and strong.

ACOG specifically recommends weight-bearing exercise, strength training and balance activities as part of healthy ageing through menopause.

Sleep Should Become a Priority

If night sweats are waking you repeatedly, sleep can become a major problem.

But even without hot flashes, sleep patterns can change during midlife.

Create a consistent sleep routine.

Try:

Regular sleep and wake times

A comfortable, cool bedroom

Limiting caffeine late in the day

Reducing screen use before bed

Regular daytime physical activity

If persistent insomnia or sleep problems are affecting your life, speak with your doctor.

Don’t simply accept months or years of poor sleep as “part of menopause.”

Stress Management Is Healthcare

Women often reach menopause while carrying enormous responsibilities.

Career.

Family.

Children.

Parents.

Relationships.

Household responsibilities.

Financial concerns.

And then their own body begins changing.

It is completely understandable to feel overwhelmed.

Build time into your routine for activities that genuinely help you relax:

Walking

Yoga

Meditation

Deep breathing

Reading

Music

Gardening

Social connection

Time outdoors

You don’t need an expensive wellness programme.

Even 15–20 minutes of something calming can be useful.

Don’t Ignore Your Sexual Health

Menopause can affect sexual wellbeing.

Vaginal dryness and discomfort can make sex painful.

Some women also experience reduced sexual desire.

This can be caused by multiple factors, including hormonal changes, sleep problems, stress, relationship factors and medications.

Please don’t assume:

“I’m older now, so I just have to accept it.”

If something is affecting your comfort or relationship, discuss it with your healthcare professional.

There are treatments available.

You Can Still Become Pregnant During Perimenopause

This surprises many women.

During perimenopause, ovulation can still occur—even if periods have become irregular.

Therefore, pregnancy remains possible.

WHO recommends contraception until 12 consecutive months have passed without menstruation, unless there is another reason pregnancy is impossible.

So:

Irregular periods ≠ no chance of pregnancy.

If you do not want to become pregnant, discuss appropriate contraception with your healthcare professional.

Bleeding After Menopause Should Not Be Ignored

This is an important warning.

Once menopause has been established—meaning you have had 12 months without periods—any new vaginal bleeding should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

Do not assume it is simply “one last period.”

Postmenopausal bleeding can have several causes, including conditions that need investigation.

Please get it checked.

When Should You See Your Doctor?

Make an appointment if you have:

Symptoms that are affecting your quality of life

Very heavy or prolonged bleeding

Persistent
